Essay Topic

Choose from two areas of the West Baton Rouge Museum website to focus on:  

Write a 300-word essay about the historic significance depicted from the video or marker you choose. Explain why it is important to preserve such information or commemorate such a place/person/event and how doing so will serve future generations.  If you’ve been to the WBR Museum before, you might also want to include something that struck you personally in your experience here.  You are encouraged to conduct additional research to help support your assertions.

Essay Contest Guidelines

  • The contest is open to students in grades 6–12 in the United States and US territories. 
  • The contest will feature a lower division consisting of grades 6-8 and an upper division consisting of grades 9-12.   
  • A winner from each division will be selected. 
  • Each essay should include a title and the student’s mailing address, grade level, email and phone number. 
  • Each essay should be 300 words or fewer, not including the title and contact info.  
  • Each student may submit only one essay. 
  • Each essay should use a 12-point font and should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document or PDF. 
  • Each essay must be a wholly original work composed by the submitter. Any essay that is found to be plagiarized in whole or in part will be immediately disqualified. 
  • The contest will run through Labor Day 2020.

  • Winners will be announced the last week of September 2020. 


Essays will be judged on originality, narrative cohesion, historical awareness, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. All submitted essays will be read and evaluated by a panel of museum staff.  Winners will receive a $100 cash prize sent via US Post to their home mailing address.  Winning submissions will be posted on the WBR Museum’s website.
